Chapter Twenty-Three

Johan Schwein

When The Aatrox Group last concluded their business in Davos, the members agreed that they would launch Population Zero the minute it was ready. That was Sunday. It was now Wednesday and Wednesday was all but gone. Nevertheless, the five of them met for an online conference hosted by Johan Schwein from the suite where he was staying in the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.

Johan opened the conversation. “Lady and gentleman, I’m happy to announce that we are a gnat’s hair away from world domination.”

Everyone but Rhys Payne smiled. Concerning the doctor, Johan could only imagine what kinds of problems millions of people dying would pose for the man. On the other hand, he felt a surge of excitement at the idea of so much death and destruction.

“Is it fair to assume that all of you have transferred your financial interests outside of the United States?” When he saw the hesitation in a few of their eyes, Johan said, “There is no more time for planning, no more time for fantasy. We are about to go operational.”

“Hey, Hooker,” Lilitu said, “what about the rest of big tech?”

The Palo Alto billionaire frowned at the way Lilitu said his last name. Johan held back a snicker.

Hooker said, “They have mirror sites ready to go in China, Transylvania, and New Zealand.”

“What about the world economy?” Payne asked.

“We already know how that song and dance ends,” Johan said. “It will die in a matter of minutes, hours, or days. For those of you who have left the markets, please tell me you’ve moved into physical gold.”

“Our finances are none of your business, Johan,” Hooker said. “Each of us is financially savvy, and if we have left a few of our assets behind, it’s because they mean almost nothing in the long run.”

He held up his hands in mock surrender. “Fair enough.”

Lilitu didn’t say a word, but Johan knew she had been in L.A. the last 36 hours trying to liquidate her US holdings. He also knew the inside of her Lear jet well enough to know she was inside of it for this meeting and likely awaiting confirmation from Johan before advising her pilot to file their final flight plan.

“I can’t believe we’re doing this a year early,” Payne said with some disgust. He was the odd man out in most conversations. The idea of “do no harm” seemed to still sit well with the chief medical advisor.

“This is a decades-long plan, Rhys,” Johan snapped. “A year is nothing.”

“Are we sure we should do this now?” Payne asked, pressing the issue. “There’s a lot we can get done in a year, given the time.”

“We placed the right people in the right positions of power to sow division in the country. We’ve been able to collapse the economy, destabilize society, and get back doors into all measures of business and technology. And now we’ve built Population Zero. Have I forgotten anything?”

“It’s because of Slater Corrigan that we’re moving early,” Hooker said.

“No, it’s not,” Johan snapped.
